The Stonewall Book Awards, established in 1971 by the American Library Association (ALA) and currently administered by the Rainbow Round Table, are the first and most enduring awards given for LGBTQ+ books. Originally called the Gay Book Award, the name evolved over time to reflect the expanding inclusivity of the LGBTQ+ community, with the award now named after the 1969 Stonewall uprising—a pivotal moment in LGBTQ+ civil rights history. The purpose of the Stonewall Awards is to recognize exceptional merit in literature relating to the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer experience. The awards are given annually in multiple categories, including adult fiction, nonfiction, and children’s and young adult literature. Winners and honor books are announced each year during the ALA’s Youth Media Awards or Midwinter Meeting, celebrating works that promote understanding, visibility, and affirmation of LGBTQ+ lives.
