ELA

Reading and Writing are some of the most powerful ways to learn.

There is nothing more important a parent can do at home to help foster learning than to support their child with reading, and finding ways for them to enjoy reading. Statistics overwhelmingly support the idea that the more a child reads and loves to read, the more successful that child is in all other aspects of life.

Let your child see you read.

Let your child read to you.

Let a love of reading (READING ANYTHING) be something you can share.

Read recipes.

Read magazines.

Read novels that transport them to another world!

JUST READ.

Here in first grade I hope to engage all my students interest in reading! We will learn to read and write and explore our written world.

AT HOME

  • You can support your student by taking advantage of Raz Kidz. Our school pays for each student to have an account. Please visit Raz Kids on an electronic device suitable for reading. Enter my teacher username: campcunningham. Click on your students name. Students should then click their password (Hint: Teachers traditionally get these as gifts). Your child can then listen to or read stories, as well as answer questions. Students will be able to earn star incentives to earn prizes in the classroom for their reading.

  • You can also support your students growth by encouraging them to write. Students at the first grade level take huge leaps and bounds in writing. Students MUST know all 52 letters in the alphabet (lowercase and capitals). They must be able to write them, name them, and give their sounds. Students need to be developing recognition of some sight words (please see the attached document for ideas). Have students practice reading and writing them as often as possible. Through out your days, when moments arise for writing, encourage your student to do the writing. It may take longer for them to write it instead of you, but they will learn more through the process of doing it themselves rather than watching you write it for them.

  • In the technology age we live in, some students would prefer to learn through interactive online games! While maybe not my top preference, they still hold great value. Here are some sights you can check out!
