Student Success Initiative

For students in grades 5 and 8 only

The Texas Education Agency has waived the Student Success Initiative for the 2019-2020 School Year.

The Student Success Initiative (SSI) was enacted by the 76th Texas Legislature in 1999 and modified by the 81st Texas Legislature in 2009 and applies to students in grades 5 and 8. Its purpose is to ensure that all students receive the instruction and support they need to be academically successful in mathematics and reading. The Student Success Initiative outlines the grade advancement requirements for students enrolled in grades 5 and 8 who take the STAAR reading and mathematics tests.

In order for students to advance to the next grade level, the student must demonstrate proficiency on these assessments or by unanimous decision of the grade placement committee (GPC). The GPC is required to meet after each administration for which the student did not meet passing standards to develop an accelerated instruction plan that will provide the student with ongoing instructional support. In making promotion decisions, in addition to the accelerated instruction plan, the GPC is required to consider:

  • the recommendation of the student's teacher
  • the student's grades
  • the state assessment scores, and
  • any other relevant academic information

The students are provided up to three opportunities to pass the tests: April, May, and June.
