Accreditation is review of the quality of higher education institutions and programs. In the United States, accreditation is a major way that students, families, government officials, and the press know that an institution and/or program provides a quality education.
Accreditation is:
A voluntary quality assurance process
A peer review course of action
A method of validation
Recognition that an institution/program has met standards set forth by the peer-reviewing body
Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) Approved Colleges/Universities
Pay attention to the degree type when searching for programs (Bachelor, Master, Residency, or Fellowship)
Also note that some programs have their "accreditation voluntarily withdrawn" due to the change of requirement of an entry-level master's degree to sit for the certification test. These schools are likely not accepting any more applications/admissions to their athletic training program.
Texas is the only state in U.S. to allow state licensure without national certification, meaning you can work as an athletic trainer at any place of employment that does not require certification (as some still do). Through this method, students can attend a non-accredited college/university to satisfy the requirements under Method A - Apprenticeship. Thus, some schools in Texas provide educational pathways coupled with "apprentice" assignments to gain the required hours. In many cases, these pathways allow for the student to earn money while learning as these schools are permitted to pay AT students for services provided.
