Mr. Cornman, Liberty High School’s FFA Advisor described FFA as, “‘Future Farmers of America’ was founded by a group of young farmers in 1928. Their mission was to prepare future generations for the challenges of feeding a growing population. They taught us that agriculture is more than planting and harvesting – it’s a science, it’s a business and it’s an art.” Many don't have a basic understanding of what FFA is. Mr. Cornman wants everyone to not only understand what it is, but what all it entails.
Many people wonder why FFA is important, “The reason FFA is important is the training and hands on experience students get which will give them the tools to take control of their own lives. Members can be more than farmers, we become skilled workers, welders, fitters, mechanics, veterinarians, government officials, entrepreneurs, bankers, teachers, and professionals in many fields,” Mr. Cornman said.
Some people wonder what the purpose of FFA is. Mr. Cornman responded with, “The purpose of the FFA is to give students the opportunity to learn job skills and make career decisions for their future, with bunches of fun mixed in.”
Abigail Riddle, Junior, is a member of FFA. Wiyh the pandemic currently ongoing, FFA is looking a little different than usual. “Due to Covid-19, our chapter has done a few things so far. We have helped with parking and clean up at every home football game. We had an ice cream social to discuss our new upcoming officers. Bri and I represented our chapter by helping the concession stand at the Shannon Co. Saddle Club in Montier,” Abigail said.
With Covid, it has been hard to do things with the chapter, especially trap. One shoot was recently cancelled due to covid which resulted in everybody getting behind in practices.
Abbey wishes she could, “make it to where we could go to all of our contests and nationals in Indiana since last year we weren’t able to go due to Covid.” Brianne Abbey continued, “I wish we could’ve had our contests and were able to go to nationals this year. However they were cancelled due to Covid-19.” With this pandemic going on around, it could be hard with us going to competitions and such.
Brianne Abbey’s favorite part of FFA this year is, “I have parked at both the senior graduation and the home football games. I worked concessions at one of the Shannon Co. Saddle Club activities in Montier. We also had our yearly ice cream social.” In FFA, there's a lot of activities the FFA members get to do year round, including what she had listed above. Due to the global pandemic that is Covid-19, it has ruint a lot of things for us in the FFA Community.
Some of the strengths Brianne noticed were, “The strengths I see is how close knit we and loyal we all are to our friends and our FFA family.”
Even though this year looks different in FFA, it is still a great thing to be a part of.
