Earlier this February FTA announced their Teacher of the Month as the 12th Grade English teacher, Kala Chambers. When questioned how she felt about being made Teacher of the Month, she replied, “It is an honor to be teacher of the month. I love my students and love what I do, so it feels nice to be recognized by the students.”
“I usually look for how much of a team player the teacher is, how involved they are not only during the school day but what extra effort they put in outside of school, and what kind of rapport they have with the students,” Ms. Chambers answered when asked what she looks for when selecting teachers for TOTM.
Diving deeper into Ms. Chambers’ curriculum, she gave her reasons for becoming a teacher, “I have always wanted to be a teacher. When I was in elementary, I wanted to be a teacher so I could write with markers on the board. However, when I got older, it turned into wanting to make a difference in students’ lives.”
“I do not regret becoming a teacher. If I had it to do over again, I would still become a teacher,” Ms. Chambers continued.
Ms. Chambers was asked what some of her favorite things as a teacher were. She responded with, “helping prepare seniors for life after graduation, helping seniors improve their writing skills, and getting to know students and what extracurricular activities they are interested in.”
Her favorite class memory was just like out of an episode from The Office, “The Seniors of 2019 put my stapler in jello,” responded Ms. Chambers.
When asked about what Ms. Chambers hoped for in the future she began to say, “I plan to get my Master's Degree so I can further my education and improve myself for my students.”
