Every year, the Mountain View- Birch Tree High School has a hoop queen. The hoop queen coordination is in between the Liberty’s boys junior varsity and the varsity basketball games. When entering the high school to go to these games, there are main windows. One of the spirit activities of the hoop queen spirit week, is decorating these windows. Each grade level gets to decorate their window. Their overall theme of the windows was winter wonderland. The windows were judged by our school sponsors.
Each window was judged by a different sponsor. Coming in first place, the seniors were awarded $200 to their class by Simmons Bank. Robert’s Flooring selected the sophomores for second place and awarded them $150. Winning $100 the juniors were awarded third place from Hometown Insurance. And lastly, the freshmans came in fourth winning $50 for their class from Brown’s Farm and Garden.
The freshman’s window quote was to “freeze out the bears.” Ellee Miller, a freshman said, “the idea came from it being winter and it's the cold and freeze out the bares.” They used paint, paper, and a stuffed animal that was an eagle. “We wanted to keep it basic and simple,” Miller stated. If she were to have the option to change the window design she would, “use more materials to add more style.”
Decorating things such as windows, takes time. Miller mentioned that it took a, “few hours at night and few hours during the day,” to finish the freshman window. Planning the overall design also takes time and trying to get a little of everyone’s ideas put into the design can be difficult. Ellee Miller said, “we changed our mind,” on the design, “two or three times.” Miller also said she wanted to help work on the window design to help “show school spirit.”
Sophomore, Mayan Castaneda stated, “we decided to make our window like this because it would be ours and it would be unique.” They used cardboard, paint, paper, plastic, and cotton balls. Castaneda thinks the window looks really good and, “we definitely have the chance to win this one,” because the window has 3D features. The sophomores that wanted to help with the window took them about a week and a day to finish the window.
Mayan said, “We changed our original idea because we really wanted to have our window be ours and not copied by someone else.”
Mayan continued, “We have selected a few and that is just because we had an incident last time where we had people come last minute and just mess around and ruin things. Mayan wants to decorate the window because, “so I can show my appreciation of my grade and so our grade can have something they are proud of and worked hard to get done.
