Family Career and Community Leaders of America is to help strengthen the function of the family as a basic unit of society. It encourages democracy through cooperative action in the home and community. It encourages individual and group involvement in helping achieve global cooperation and harmony. It also promotes greater understanding between youth and adults.
On March 3rd, 2021, the Region 9 Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) got to hold their first meeting since COVID-19 sprung about. The Mountain View- Birch Tree Liberty High FCCLA members were honored to be a part of this meeting for the election of the region 9 officers. Members of FCCLA running for the officer positions had to come up with a speech and speak in front of the audience. Along with the audience, a delegate that was selected from each school voted on the members who were running for each officer position.
Within Liberty High School’s FCCLA chapter, there are many officer positions that a member can be. Some members have two positions, this is due to the fact that there are only five members within the Liberty school. The President is Kiah Reece. Shayla Denton holds both the Vice President of Projects and Vice President of Memberships. Also holding two positions, Isobel Tripp is both the Vice President of Publicity and Vice President of STAR events. Keele Murrow is the Secretary/Treasurer, and Madison Matthews is the Historian.
Kiah Reece is a senior and is Liberty High School’s FCCLA president. She has been in FCCLA for four years. When Reece first got into high school she thought FCCLA, “was something new and I thought it would be fun! I love to cook and interact with others and I thought this would be perfect for me!” Reece is also excited to, “see what the rest of the year brings and to bond with all of the girls on our end of the year trip.” In the election meeting, Kiah’s favorite part “was getting to listen to what the other chapters have been doing and getting to listen to their speeches.”
Liberty’s FCCLA Vice President of Projects and Memberships is Shayla Denton, who is also a senior and has been in FCCLA for two years. Denton is also looking forward to their, “end of the year trip.” In the meeting, Denton thought “it was nice getting to go somewhere since Covid, and it was nice getting to listen to other people’s opinions.” She also thinks people should join FCCLA because they “will get to meet new people, get a whole new perspective on life, and learn new leadership skills.”
Isobel Tripp is a junior and is Liberty’s FCCLA Vice President of Publicity and STAR events. She is “excited to actually be able to go to all of our meetings next year and be able to compete in STAR events next year.” Tripp was happy that her FCCLA members and herself got to attend a meeting this year. “We had not been able to go anywhere since covid hit and everything got cancelled. So being able to actually go to a meeting and be able to elect officers was amazing,” Tripp stated.
Some words of wisdom from Kiah Reece: “Joining FCCLA has been an amazing experience and has truly changed my life. I have learned leadership skills and how to interact with others. When I joined I was just a shy little freshman and I decided to join and I have not looked back since! I have had the opportunity to go to state leadership conferences and interact with others from all over the state! I think that anyone who is even thinking about joining or is interested at all should talk to a current member or Mrs. Barnes about it and I promise you that you will not regret it!”
