During December many families come together to share the holiday spirit. December holds different holiday celebrations like Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Boxing day, and Omisoka. Christmas is the holiday many students at Liberty High celebrate. It is a holiday that celebrates the historical birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas is celebrated by many Americans by putting up a pine tree and awaiting Santa Claus’ arrival. The second most popular holiday celebrated by Liberty High students is Hanukkah. Hanukkah is an eight day celebration that commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem following the Maccabean Revolt. Hanukkah celebrations revolve around the menorah being lit. Another candle is added to the menorah after sundown on each of the eight nights of the holiday. The ninth candle is used to light the others, called the shamash ('helper').
December holds a wide diversity of holidays to celebrate. During the Christmas season families hold onto their traditions by visiting relatives, opening presents the night before or doing a secret Santa. Giving and receiving Christmas presents is a fun activity, enjoyed by many. An interesting question some Liberty High students answered was, “What was the weirdest gift you have ever received?”. Many hadn’t gotten any odd or gag gifts, while others had some pretty interesting gifts given to them. Sophomore, Lucas Frazier, once received a toilet seat and sophomore, Chloe Kelts, was gifted an actual box of rocks!
Christmas is one of the most popular holidays across America, bringing families and friends together to enjoy each other’s company and exchange thoughtful gifts. We hope everyone traveling this holiday season is safe, wear your masks, ditch the electronics, and enjoy the time you have with your family.
