Thanksgiving gives Christmas a run for its money on being America’s favorite holiday. The only difference is gift exchanging; although with Thanksgiving you do exchange with others but with your favorite foods. One of the great debates of the holiday is turkey or ham? In a very close call with a poll Liberty High students took the week before break, with a 7% difference, many decided ham was preferred over turkey. A fun fact about the first Thanksgiving dinner is that turkey was not an original item on the menu, many had venison, duck, goose, oysters, lobster, eel and fish were served.
When Liberty High students were asked what some of their favorite dishes were at their Thanksgiving dinners many chimed in with very unique dishes. Some eye-catching sides were german candies, shrimp, pickled watermelon rind, tamales, pizza, chicken and dumplings, meatballs and duck!
Many students at Liberty High agreed that watching football while enjoying the company of their families and a good thanksgiving dinner was a long time family tradition. Students were able to share their special family traditions in this questionnaire. Adison Burks, a sophomore, went on to say, “My family is pretty religious so we always have someone pick a prayer to read before our meal”. Trenton Layman, a freshman, likes to get together and play board games, and compete in competitions like video games, and races” with his family.
Thanksgiving is one of the most popular holidays across America, bringing families and friends together to enjoy each other’s company and delicious dishes. We hope everyone traveling this holiday season is safe, wear your masks, ditch the electronics and enjoy the time you have with your family.
