Supplies: shaving cream, 2 x clear cups, water, food coloring, and a spoon
The experiment essentially simulates how clouds collect water and eventually, when too much water is stored, it rains. The shaving cream is put on top of a glass of water, and spoonfuls of colored water is dropped onto the shaving cream. Eventually, the weight is too much, and the water drops through into the glass. We can explain how clouds store water and why it rains!
(kindergarten through 5th grade )
For this experiment, students can experiment with how to make clouds and learn about the effects of water vapor. This experiment is done with commonly found items around the house including: a jar with a lid, hot water, ice, and hairspray.
