Roding Valley High School is a co-educational secondary school and sixth form located in Loughton, Essex, England.
How did you implement the tool?
"So especially for staff who are new to AI, teach mate almost pushes them to be very specific with their prompts to get the best output. And I think that's one of its real strengths as a platform." - Charlotte Bleakley
Examples of use:
"So with the TeachMateAI platform. I can be quite specific with what I would like on there, using all the course content, and I can ask it to create a resource for me. And it creates it, obviously, in a matter of moments, a resource that I can then edit and use in the classroom." - Paige Larkin
Advice for others:
"If you simply ignore AI, it's going to cause you more problems than if you try and understand it and tackle it." - Charlotte Bleakley
Issues with assessment:
"Instead of shutting that door completely (to AI), is instead thinking about what we can do (with AI). How can we adapt the tasks and the learning expectations to allow students to develop their skill sets without shutting the door on AI?" - Adam Miah
Impact:
"I think teach mate AI has had a massive impact on the staff here at Rodin Valley."
- Chris Perera
Ideas for improvements for TeachMateAI:
"I think one of the ways it can be improved is actually having, from a SEND perspective, having a little bit more of a focus on the actual learning conditions. So, for example, if I go into IEP writer and I put in dyslexia, it will give me a whole raft of strategies. If I go in and I put in numeracy difficulties, a lot of those strategies will be the same. They're very generic learning strategies, which, as I say, is great to springboard, but I think starting to narrow that actually into conditions. So here are some strategies for autism, here are some strategies for ASD, ADHD, ADD, OCD, whatever it may be, will just give you an even tighter springboard to jump from." - Tony Taylor
The role of AI in education:
"I always stand by the fact that teachers will not be replaced by AI, but they could be replaced by teachers who use AI, because there's going to be such a push on understanding it, working with it, and using it for our own learning, whether that's to help students engage, or whether it's workload." - Charlotte Bleakley
Managing change:
"I think it's really important, whenever being in charge, any sort of change, it's about getting people to understand the benefits from that change and addressing that, but then also being quite honest about some of the risks around it and saying to people, look, we understand that you might be concerned about 'X', but here's what we can do about 'X' and here's how we can solve it." - Paige Larkin
Data Security issues:
"I would feel a lot more confident giving it to Teachmate AI than ChatGPT or Gemini, because there's the whole thing of ownership and what they do with that data afterwards. And I think that's where Teachmate AI is very upfront and open about its data" - Charlotte Bleakley
Managing workload in Secondary Schools:
"As staff member, a governor and a union rep, we've been trying our best to reduce teacher workload, and AI has really been helpful in that, in the sense that it removes the need for excessive tasks such as research or creating resources." - Chris Perera
What changes have you had to make with pupils in the context of AI:
"We'd always get students to sign a documentation anyway, to declare it's their own work. But we've had to add an extra layer this year around clarity on the use of AI.
