Pre-Read:

• I look at the cover, the back, and any cover flaps. I flip through the text to see what I can find out, big picture.
• I decide what the text is about in general
• I decide what my goals/desired outcomes are.

Figure out Text Structure:

• I notice that a lot of information will be given in sidebars, captions, and graphics,
• I see there will be different chapters, each about a different aspect of rats and people.

Active reading Strategies:

• I move across pages and sections in a logical order,
  • I might skip around during pre-reading, or skip over things I don’t need to read, but once I am really reading, I make sure that I read with a logical plan based on the goals I have.
• I pause at the end of a section to restate what I’ve learned so far (either verbally with a partner or summarizing in writing)
• I expand my general idea of what I’m reading about as new categories of information are offered by the author.
• I keep track of my learning by taking notes
  • I use the text structure to help predict a structure for my notes.

Review:

• I review my notes to ensure all the main ideas and important details have been recorded accurately
• I make sure I understand what I have read well enough that I could explain it to someone else
• I revisit and reread areas of the text where I struggled, if I realize I am confused.
