Session One: Developing Young Readers (Grades 4 to 8): The Science and Practices of Reading Instruction
April 23, 2025 7:00 to 8:30 pm EST
In this interactive session, Heather will explain the skills we need to become confident competent readers. She will address the current challenges of teaching reading and the particular challenges for students in the junior grades and highlight effective strategies to support students. This session will focus on the importance of explicit vocabulary instruction and the role of oral language in building comprehension. Participants will leave with practical, evidence-informed strategies and classroom resources they can apply immediately.
Session Two: Strategic Literacy Interventions Grades 4-8 - Teaching Morphology and Strategies for Approaching Complex Text
May 7, 2025 7:00 to 8:30 pm EST
This interactive session will help teachers extend literacy learning beyond the language classroom by focusing on morphology- the study of how words are built. You will leave with high-impact strategies and engaging resources to help students recognize and understand the smallest units of meaning in words (morphemes). This is an essential skill that empowers students to decode unfamiliar words, expand their vocabulary and deepen comprehension. Heather will also share tools for summarizing and synthesizing. Participants will have an opportunity to investigate activities and explore ways to implement them in their classrooms.
