My name is Ms. Son, and I am so excited to be your child’s 8th-grade ELA Teacher. I am optimistic that students will develop a love of reading, writing, AND learning as well as life skills that can’t be taught in a classroom. I have no doubt that with the support of the family and community, our scholars will develop unique abilities that will help them as they move onward and forward in an ever-connected global world.
I knew in high school that I wanted to be a teacher. As a first-generation immigrant teaching English to other immigrants who came after me, I experienced the joy that comes from seeing others learn. I quickly observed firsthand that education was and is a powerful way to change your station, but more importantly in the words of Nelson Mandela, to change the world. My love for literature and reading made it easy to choose the content. I received my MA in Education through Teachers College at Columbia University and I joined Teach for America to start my teaching journey through the lens of understanding inequities in education. Lastly, I received my certification in secondary ELA and this is my sixth year teaching middle school.
As a mom of three boys, ages 17, 19 & 20, I am sure I share much of your same concerns. Please feel free to reach out to me with questions or suggestions. I encourage parent/guardian participation and welcome working with you to navigate this school year together. Please review and respond to the course curriculum and survey so that we make the most of our time together.
Other than reading, I love to hike and be challenged by nature. I love (almost) all things outdoors. If you want tips for the best hiking trails in the Catskills, I'm your person!
Yes! I am the only female in a family of 5. That's my husband and three boys: 18, 16, & 19 (in order of standing). Can't say that I don't enjoy being the Queen = )
If I win the lotto, you'll probably find me in a cozy cabin in the woods with a stack of books and an infinite amount of great coffee. I love learning. If you're an expert in cryptocurrency, John D. Rockefeller, The Civil War or other topics, share them with me.
Although I knew I wanted to teach when I was in high school, life had other plans for me. Instead, I went into the fashion business, started and sold my own companies, designing and selling shoes for 20+ years. I have a special admiration for entrepreneurs.
