Director's Note/Nota del director

When Rich and I first set out to stage The Comedy of Errors, we knew we didn't just want to tell a story of mistaken identity; we wanted to explore the beautiful, messy friction of a world where cultures collide.

Teatro Leyden's unique approach to theatre allows us to lean into the inherent "errors" of both languages. In our production, the confusion isn't just about having the same face it’s about the gaps between what we say and what we feel.

Performing outdoors in this beautiful durable take on a mini Globe Theatre constructed by Mr Greg Lindemann has been the greatest inspiration and most profound challenge for both the students and staff. This stage demands intimacy from our actors and our audience. There is no "fourth wall" here; the sky is our ceiling, and you, the audience, are our neighbors.  By stripping away the technical elements our students are used to relying on and adding in the natural atmosphere of the beautiful East Leyden Courtyard, we were all forced to focus on the raw energy of the actors to build this world with the beautifully unique costumes of Ms. Ruffato. Watching our students navigate the physical comedy, the rhythmic complexity of two languages, and the sheer stamina required for outdoor theatre has been a masterclass in collaboration.

The world you see tonight was built on the creativity and fearlessness of these young artists. Our students have not only memorized lines in multiple languages but have also helped shape the visual landscape of the show. There are student fingerprints on every prop, every costume, every choreographed chase, and every moment of improvised fun. To their credit the students have embraced the "errors" of the rehearsal process with grace, proving that even when we are lost in translation, we can still find our way home through laughter.
