Director’s Note
Humor. Is. Coming!
Over the summer, I read many different plays, and each one had something that didn't seem to fit. Should I do a romance? Too lovey-dovey. What about a classic? Eh, it's kind of long for four weeks of rehearsal. Who is interested in performing Shakespeare? Am I ready to edit a Shakespeare? Ekkk! I had a fantastic opportunity to attend a conference with other theater teachers, and one said, "Sometimes, it is ok to choose something that is just for fun." And that, my friends, is what I did. I looked for something fun, and the search began until I landed on Game of Tiaras. It has a bit of romance, featuring classic Disney characters and some SHAKESPEARE! This was everything I was looking for! Game of Tiaras is for fun, to be funny, to be absurd, to be a parody, to be a challenge, and above all, to work as a company on a show that will allow many students to shine. This play is designed to be a wild ride, meaning things might only sometimes go according to plan. I could see how this show would allow the Leyden Theater Company a chance to embrace the chaos! These unexpected moments often lead to the most memorable experiences. My hope is that the company and audiences can experience laughter and hilarity at how princesses are not always perfect.
I can't express enough thanks to my company members for having fun and playing with this production. Gabriela Grandez-Alinea, Marissa Ramirez Alvarez, and Isabel Gonzalez have been rising as leaders, and I am in awe of their work in this production. Thank you to my production team: Anna Reed for keeping everything organized and the fantastic design and promotion of the show, Soozie Holms for costuming more students than she ever has for a regular production, Frank Bavone for always being a helping hand, Gabe Gorsline for creating a medieval world via lighting and Lindsay Longstreth for conquering the build of this kingdom and a throne that will go down as the most amazing throne I have ever seen. I am grateful that my family supports me in all of my theater escapades. I know I can conquer the world with my husband, Noah, who is my hero.
Without further adieu, Let the Games Begin!
