Students in 5th grade Social Studies take United States Studies: 1865 to the present. Students will continue their study of United States History from 4th grade Social Studies. They will begin with the period of Reconstruction in the United States. Other topics will include westward expansion, the United States as a world power, World War II, and the Cold War. The course will end with present day issues in the United States. During the course, students will be exposed to the social studies literacy skills for the twenty-first century. Some examples of these literacy skills for 5th grade include utilizing different types of media to synthesize Social Studies information, identifying and explaining cause and effect relationships, and analyzing multiple sources to identify bias.
