Worm Composting in the Classroom

Lead Teacher: Whitley Cheeseboro

Mentors: Richenda Batson, Joe Parks

2019-2020 School Year

This year, our worm farms have moved up to 4th Grade! Students have researched their worms and how to give them the best care. They are also beginning to initiate worm friendly scientific experiments with the worms.

2018-2019

Our students received worms from a classroom in a fellow Green Steps school, Dutch Fork Elementary. Our Leaphart third grade students researched worms and how to maintain them in the classroom. They add a variety of types of food for their worms from the classroom. Once Ms. Cheeseboro started this project, the other third grade classes in the unit also wanted worms! We purchased more red wigglers from a worm farmer, and now all classes are enjoying monitoring and learning from their worm farms. When a good amount of compost is generated it is then added to the garden areas amend our school gardens and the kindergarten strawberry patch. DHEC Action for a Cleaner Tomorrow curriculum activities such as, “Can you Dig it?” and “Classroom Composting ”, are experiences that helped to begin these projects. Student will share their expert projects at school gatherings and parents.
