Our entire DFES community recycles all office and classroom paper products, plastic containers and jugs, aluminum cans, and cardboard. At the beginning of the year Ms. Sommers and Mrs. Umberger did recycling captain trainings for 1st through 5th grade students. On Mondays our recycling captains collect bins from classrooms and other areas of the school and take them to the collection site. At lunch, we collect all recycling as well. We measure the mass collected from lunch recycling and include it with our Waste Stream Data compiled each month that is displayed on our “Cafeteria Waste Stream Data Wall”. At the beginning of the year, cafeteria waste stream trainings were given by Mr. Epting and Mrs. Umberger to every class. Mrs. Umberger also offered classroom composting/recycling lessons to new teachers, classes that had a good number of new students, and by teacher request. This included students sorting and classifying items that can be composted/recycled.
In November, 3rd -5th Grade recycling captains also were able to participate in a “Palmetto Pride Sponsored Field Trip to Sonoco Recycling”. Students were then expected to lead their classrooms in the recycling efforts in their own classrooms. (Recycling Captains)

Monthly, Mrs. Donald has her third grade classes weigh the amount of bags collected by placing individual bags into groups of larger bags. Students would write down the amount each bag weighed and then calculate the total number of pounds for that month. Then data is compiled and organized on a hallway chart. Students added up each month’s total to get the overall total. Before starting collection of plastic bags students read about how plastic affected the environment so they understood why plastic bags needed to be recycled.
This project will be emphasized during third grade learning celebrations forour school community and the families in Mrs. Donald's class.

4th graders learn about what “upcycling means”. Students design and create items. The estimate its value by doing some research and set up a silent auction. Auction will take place the day of our last Tag of Honor Ceremonies and during our annual Talent Show.
This project will run the entire month of May. Students will share their projects with the entire DFES community during their auction. An on-line catalog will be created so that parents can place their bid on the site.

We have a Compost (our own from our School-Wide Foodwaste-to-Compost Program) & Non-GMO Seed Sale. Our compost will be sold during Earth Day week and possibly at Soda City for their annual Earth Day Event by our 5th grade students. NON-GMO seeds will be sold during Earth Day Week by our 1st grade students.
Grades 1st & 3rd-5th will help lead the sale and will help to pass out flyers to anyone who will purchase our compost and seeds.
