Sci-fi and Tragedy
She gazed into the pond, the ripples ruining her reflection. It didn’t matter that she couldn’t see her reflection, soon, it would all be over. They would find her momentarily. She had been so foolish, being so blinded by love. She just couldn’t have borne the thought that he didn’t know what she truly was. And she thought he would understand, and still love her, but she was wrong. She had thought it was true love. He had only loved her because he thought he could sell her to the government, he just needed proof. She stared at the pond until she heard the shouts and voices. She stayed still, and as she became surrounded, she began to think, this was the end, she would never find true love, have a family, or grow old with her loving partner. No, that would never happen now, because she had trusted him, and he had betrayed her. She heard something like “Freeze”, and slowly reached for her pocket. This was her plan, as she felt the bullet hit her body. She knew that would happen. Struggling to finish her task, pain overtaking her, she reached into her pocket. She pulled out a locket with a picture of her and her boyfriend, and tossed it into the lake, just as she felt her body hit the ground, and looked over at the lake, just in time to see the locket sink, and then, knowing she completed her final task, took her last breath.

“Catherine, meet Cate, your new sister.” Mom tells me as a girl approaches me. “So you better act like sisters,” she whispers to me. “Welcome Cate! This is Catherine, my daughter.”
“Nice to meet you” she says quietly through her mask.
“Nice to meet you too” I say back trying to smile. Mom walks away looking satisfied, and leaves us to introductions.
“Why the hat?” She asks.
“Why the mask? We aren't sick and dad is a germaphobe.”
“I asked first.”
“So?” I returned not expecting what was next.
“Promise you won’t tell anyone?”
“Ummm…” I start to regret asking. She takes off her mask and reveals a cat muzzle. I gasp and finally start to smile. “...What?”
“I’m half cat too!” I say taking off my cat revealing cat ears. Suddenly she grabs my arm and says “Our neighbors are watching us.”
I blush and yell, “Just excited for drama class!” before hurrying inside and leading Cate to our room.
“You get attacked by a magical can of cat food too?”
I am speechless for a minute before saying “No, I think I was genetically altered or something like that. Mom and Dad adopted me as a baby not knowing I was half cat and didn’t get any background besides that they found me at a lab.”
“That must be why they adopted me! So we could have someone who we shared experiences with!”
“I am so excited that we are sisters.”
This was the start of our adventure.

Poetry and Romance
The night is turning
Into something beautiful
Dark shadows are cast
The moon is glowing
What a night to be alive
Her footsteps are heard
Every time we met
Hearts raced, dizziness, weak smiles
But love hates me so
How beautiful now,
Though the sky has begun to
Mourn the loss of our
Love, or what we thought
For we were too young to know
It kills from within
This is the last night
We will ever meet and it
Feels so bittersweet
She was supposed to
Hold my hand just one more time
Before it all goes
Should I leave or stay?
She loves me, she loves me not
Waiting in the rain
Sinister shadows
Footsteps are heard, hope flies free
Is it really her?
But something is off
She stands here in the flesh but
Her mind is not hers
Trying to reason
With a devil is useless
Fighting was futile
As she stepped forward
It occurred that she might try
To attack me now
But believing in
Our love we fought so hard for
My feet did not move
Trust can be harmful
When it doesn’t go both ways
And choosing to trust
Has consequences
Therefore it was expected
In hindsight, that this
Rendezvous might not
Go as well as we had hoped
Weakly laying there
With blood flowing out
Of my body faster than
Could ever be safe
I stared up at the
Night’s beautiful, dark shadows,
I hoped to be found
Action and Historical Fiction
The battle had begun, and I, a Spanish gunner, was not ready.
It was fierce, as the ships ground away, swaying sailors like rag dolls.
When and how the battle would end was anyone's guess. I should probably give more context.
It's April 1722. A storm was brewing, forcing the pirate Captain Anchor to leave Kingston. He is known for his raids of Bermuda and Cape Verde, and he is feared in every corner of the world.
He raided a Spanish merchant, the Pluma Dorada. My galleon soon caught up to them. A cannon fight started. My mates say I am a good shot, and I hit right at the base of the mast. This caused a small fire, which certainly got the pirates vexed. They pulled up to us, grappling hooks ready.
I sprinted out of the hold after firing a shot. My sword was eager to rest in my belt. The pirates swung aboard, and gunshots rang in my ears.
As I neared the captain, cutting men down near me, I realized who I was coming to. He's the most feared of them all! As I drew my cutlass, the captain's eyes filled with fire and despair. With three blows, I knocked him down, bruising his skull. I later found out that he ended up unconscious, and slipped away from his rich, adventurous life.
As for me, I became a hero, a symbol of the end of buccaneers and renewal of peace in the deep, dark seas.

HONORABLE MENTIONS
Fable and Mystery
In the middle of a vibrantly green and overwhelmingly dense jungle, all the animals congregated in a frenzied manner around the gigantic, ancient Ceiba tree because something shockingly unusual had occurred. The wise, venerable Owl, a figure of sage-like wisdom and calm, was found eerily still and unsettlingly silent at the rugged base of the tree. This discovery sent waves of alarm and palpable fear through the gathered crowd of diverse and curious creatures.
Among them was Simon, the sloth, known for his excruciatingly slow movements and profoundly thoughtful observations. As the tension thickly hung in the humid air, Simon declared in a slow, deliberate drawl, "We must contemplate the bizarre and drastic climatic changes enveloping us," because the jungle had been tormented by relentless, scorching heat and sporadic, violent storms of great intensity.
Accusations started flying wildly, much like the bright, flamboyant Macaw, who flapped her vivid wings frantically, and the stealthy, elusive Jaguar, both of whom vehemently blamed each other for the dwindling, scarce resources and the encroaching, suffocating shrinkage of their living spaces. However, Simon the Sloth urged a calming, thoughtful pause. "Let's meticulously trace back our steps to the last full moon, to decode the signs that nature has been desperately signaling to us," he suggested with sage wisdom.
They noticed the surroundings—leaves on the Ceiba tree were unusually dry and brittle, water sources had become mysteriously scarce, and the overall living conditions were oppressively overcrowded and fraught with tension.
As they pieced together the nightmarish puzzle, a chilling realization dawned upon them: the habitat's severe degradation due to climate change had driven the Owl to seek relief on the ground from his oppressively hot nest high above. It was a tragic accident—a fall that no one had witnessed but that all had indirectly contributed to through their struggle for survival in a harshly changing world.
Simon’s slow, reflective words resonated deeply, echoing through the lush, dense foliage. “This was not a sinister act by one, but a tragic consequence of our rapidly changing home. We must unite, adapt, and heal, not just for Owl, but for the entire jungle.”
Beneath the towering shadow of the Ceiba, the animals, stirred by a new sense of urgency and unity, resolved to protect their home, recognizing that the real adversary was the silent, creeping menace of climate change that affected them all.

Mega Man Big Brian Easter Bunny
Once upon a time there was a Bunny. He was taken from Earth to Pluto. At Pluto he was made into a test subject. And from then on he had a big brain.
When Mega Man Big Brian Easter Bunny was three he traveled back to earth by a ducky vehicle made by himself. Mega Man Big Brian Easter Bunny was seeking to eat eggs. He thought they were mythical. Mega Man Big Brian Easter Bunny searched everywhere to find eggs. But he couldn’t find any so he searched for a place to live instead and found a tree stump. Mega Man Big Brian Easter Bunny built the tree stump into his lab and his home. After years of searching Mega Man Big Brian Easter Bunny decided that he should make eggs instead.
Mega Man Big Brian Easter Bunny looked in all the books about eggs. He went to the library and asked the librarian but they were always afraid of his big brain. After all the looking he made a formula. He searched for every ingredient and made some potions.
After 3 whole years, he finishes making the eggs. But they need time to be ready, so Mega Man Big Brian Easter Bunny put all of his eggs in different places: bushes, trees, cars, beds, houses, and more. But little did he know the kids were too smart and found all his eggs. They took them and opened them. But when they opened inside were some octopus tentacles.
At the schools, kids and teachers were trying to run away from these eggs. But the president made all of them stay at school because he wasn’t aware of the chaos. All day the president was watching tv and eating fresh chicken wings from the microwave.
Reporters run around trying to report people while trying to run away. The eggs went from Ohio to everywhere. But the president just got up from his couch and went to grab another fresh batch of chicken wings from the microwave.
Mega Man Big Brian Easter Bunny sees that people are touching his eggs and is really angry. He sets up cameras and places some eggs in the same place. Mega Man Big Brian Easter Bunny hopped up and down cutely and angrily.
“Uh These kids!” His plan was so close to succeeding. After making the eggs and eating them he wanted to kill all the kids. He had set this goal when he was 0.1 years old. He really hated kids. He wanted all of them to die. He decided that he would kill all of them now instead of later.
On the cameras he saw that the kids enjoyed the eggs. They smiled and ran after the eggs playful. The laughing kid even asked more kids to play with them. And had a mixed feeling in my heart. It was a sad and angry feeling. He thought and thought about what to do.
“Kill all the kids like what I wished to do when I was 0.1 years old? Or make them happy?”, he asked himself. He started his computers and egg making machine. “Hummm, what is enjoyable?”, he rubbed his head. “Chocolate!” He computed his machines to make chocolate eggs. “Now they need to look pretty. Let's add some strips, zig-zags, and polka dots,” Mega Man Big Brian Easter Bunny said joyfully.
After three hours he made three thousand eggs. He gathered what they made and put them in a basket. He ran out of his stump. “Wow, this place changed a lot!” He hid in the bush and put some eggs in secret places.
And from then on he did this every year on the same exact day. He named it Easter because it was his last name. And he gave himself a nickname-The Easter Bunny.
