If you are dissatisfied with your display name in a particular application, we may be able to help.
The display name in Google applications (Gmail, etc) is your "Preferred Name" and then your last name. So, if in Aspen your first name is Thomas but your preferred name is Tom, your email will say Tom LastName.
This is also how your name will appear in MyFlex Learning.
The preferred name field was traditionally used just by teachers so that they knew what you would like to be called. These new uses of the field therefore may be unwelcome. So, briefly:
MyFlex Learning is an entirely internal system and the display name will only be seen by you and teachers.
Aspen preferred names, if updated, will automatically affect MyFlex, so the only way to have your first name display instead is to have the preferred name removed from Aspen.
Google is slightly less internal, but the name will only be seen by those who you send or reply to by email or share files with through Google Drive.
The setup of the Google display name was a one-time setup and will not change with any changes made to Aspen. If you want your first name to be in your Google name instead, you can request that from Ms. Tenhor and/or Mr. Wininger. If you have a preferred name added or removed in Aspen, you would need to make that request for it to affect your Google account, otherwise it will only be visible to teachers and in MyFlex.
9th Graders Only (YOG2028) / Chromebook Labels - this year it was intended to have labels printed with Preferred Name and Last Name only, but there was a misunderstanding and First Preferred and Last were printed. If your preferred name was (unnecessarily) added to Aspen that was the same as your first name, you may have something like Thomas Thomas LastName. Also, those who really do not like their first name had it added when the goal was to not do that. It is better to have a label in case you leave your computer somewhere, so if you are dissatisfied with your label, please come to the Technology Office (near 163) for a replacement.
As not all services are integrated and some have connections to future college applications, you may need to discuss with your dean or counselor making a complete name change as they can go over the pros and cons of doing so, especially if you are not yet settled on what you plan to be your permanent name.
Basics:
Chromebook stickers can be reprinted in the technology office with different names on them.
You can add, remove, or change the preferred name field in Aspen. This will change your display name in MyFlex learning automatically. Your dean secretary can make this change (or ask DLCs). This change will be visible to parents/guardians. To change the first name field in Aspen requires going through your counselor/dean as it has some state requirements.
Google display names are your Preferred name (if it was in aspen or First Name if it was blank) and Last Name. If you want it changed, please contact a DLC.
For every other program...it is best to go through a counselor or dean as they can go through the unintended consequences of making those changes.
