Spanish Class 2017-2018 – Señora Foley & Señorita Park

Dear Students and Families,

We hope summer was good to everyone; we can’t wait to share our enthusiasm for the Spanish language with you and your child as he or she works toward language proficiency. This class will provide valuable lifelong listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. It will also enhance a student’s knowledge of various world cultures. In order to help your child succeed this year we have included a list of our expectations below.

Materials – Just the basics! Students will need:

  • A section of a large binder, in which to keep handouts, worksheets and lined paper (or a 1 inch binder only for Spanish class).
  • A Pencil Pouch with pens, pencils, highlighters.
  • Homework Agenda book (distributed in homeroom) to record each night’s assignments, or an app on iPad to record nightly assignments.
  • Optional Textbook – Exprésate: Textbooks will be available in the library for any student who wants or needs to take it home; you can keep the book at home for the year.

Homework – Short homework assignments will be given regularly as needed and will be reviewed in class and/or handed in. Becoming proficient in a language requires practice. Not all homework assignments will be written. Your child may be asked to review or practice material that was learned in class. Homework and long-term assignments will be posted nightly on my website (see link from Clarke’s website). Students should not spend more than 20 minutes per night on Spanish homework.

Participation – Good conduct and regular participation is expected in class everyday, and will be included as part of your grade. In class, students are expected to follow school and classroom rules, respect others and treat school property with respect. Risk-taking and mistake-making are encouraged…that’s how we learn language!

Grades – We will be implementing a system of standards-based grading this year, to foster a growth-mindset towards language study. Spanish assessments can be written, but often are speaking and listening as well. Students and families are encouraged to regularly log in to check grades on Aspen, and schedule re-takes, extra help, and/or enrichment during WIN blocks. Please see back of this sheet titled ‘Standards Based Grading in Señora Foley/Señorita Park’s Class’.

We hope that these guidelines are helpful to you and your student. If you have any questions or would like to discuss anything, please don’t hesitate to email me at acfoley@lexingtonma.org/spark@lexingtonma.org. We are looking forward to a wonderful year!
