3 Quotes: Context & Significance [3Q:C&S] Exemplar

1a) Quote: "But I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth" (1).

b)Context: Here, protagonist Holden Caulfield is speaking directly to the reader. Salinger seems to be letting the reader warm-up to Caulfield's personality, as Holden seems rather casual in how he is speaking to the audience.

c)Significance: Salinger establishes Holden's voice as colloquial. Readers may initially be struck by his slangy — nearly idiomatic — delivery of information about his parents, his schooling and many details having to do with his past. With this being the first page of the book, Salinger is setting Caulfield apart as a narrator. His honesty about his parents' having "hemorhages" about him sharing anything personal is also a reflection of his aim at establishing an authentic relationship with the reader/audience.
