I want to share some resources and some interesting clips to this page for you that will explain the importance of physical activity. What type, how hard your child should be working while getting active, why a certain exertion level is important for better cognitive functioning. This months clip is about Dr. John Ratey, auther of the book SPARK; The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and The Brain.
*How hard should my child be working for the benefits of Physical Activitiy at a moderate to vigorous level?
A few tips on type and intensity (rate of percieved exertion)
Moderate Intensity Activities: Vigorous Intensity Activities:
Brisk Walking Sprints
Swimming Swimming Laps
Biking Jumping Rope
Hiking Hiking uphill at a faster pace
Dancing biking 10mph or faster (on hills)
Endurance Training High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)
Tabata Training
Their heart rate should increase 60-80% of their Max Heart Rate....in order to reach health enhancing benefits.
This should feel like a person is breathing faster and they can feel their heart rate increase.
**Daily activities like walking to the car or grocery shopping, or daily chores should NOT feel as hard as the description above.
