Grade 1

Animals and What They Need to Survive

First grade walks are based on animals and their habitats.  Students learn what animals need to live: food, water, warmth, air and shelter. They explore how different habitats meet the needs or organisms throughout the year and observe birds and other common animals.

Note: All adults who work with children in the Big Backyard program must have a valid CORI .  Please click here to fill out a CORI form. CORI checks are good for 3 years.   Check with your school office if you have additional questions.

Pre-walk training at School

It is highly recommended that volunteers attend the pre-walk on-site training at your school. Trainings occurs on or very close to the day of the walk.  This interactive training will take the parent volunteers along the walk route, explain the overall approach for the particular walk, point out any exciting discoveries along the way and demonstrate any equipment used during the walk.

If you do not know when the training is, look at the signup or contact your Big Backyard team.

Training Videos

View these 15 minute videos to learn an overall approach to guiding children outdoors as well as modeling of the activities on each specific walk.
