The Day of Service Committee chooses several of the submissions to be read, by the author, at the MLK Day of Service Opening Ceremonies, which this year will be held over Zoom. In past years we have had over 50 student submissions, and have asked five students to read their essays. It is a great experience both for the students and the audience.

This year, we would like to ask students to write a 200-400 word essay reflecting on what Dr. King might have said about the state of racial justice in our country today, and what they can do personally to advance racial justice. The instructions for the students are pasted below. We would be grateful if you would share them with your students and invite them to submit an essay. If you have questions or thoughts about this request, please reach out to Neil McGaraghan at neilmcgaraghan@gmail.com
