What is Science Olympiad?
Science Olympiad is a competitive STEM activity. Each year, 23 events are offered. Each student usually competes in 3-4 events that span a wide range of STEM topics. Students compete in "study events" (tests), "lab events" (hands-on investigations), "building events" (construction of devices or structures) and "hybrid events". Emphasis is placed on teamwork and real-world applications. Science Olympiad is a national organization with teams in all 50 states.
Diamond competes in Division B (middle school division) - Division A is for elementary schools, and Division C is for high schools.
How many students participate at Diamond?
Everyone who is interested! By January, there will be 1 varsity team and 1 or 2 alternate teams. Diamond usually brings more students to the state competition than any other school in Massachusetts!
What is the difference between the "varsity" team and the "alternate" teams?
All Diamond students on any team compete at the state tournament in March, and everyone can earn individual awards (medals or ribbons) in their events. However, only the varsity scores count towards Diamond's overall placement. If we win first place in Massachusetts, the Varsity team would attend Nationals. All students attend the same practices, but we expect varsity students to put more time into studying outside of practices - so it is a bigger time commitment to be on the varsity team.
How can I prepare for the tryouts?
Please see the "Tryout Information" tab on this website!
What does it cost?
Students should expect to spend $0-20 for each study event and lab event they do, and $20-$80 for each building event. Most students will have 3 events. We usually have a small team fee (usually around $15) to pay for team supplies and our team dues for State and Invitational tournaments. We also give students the option to order team apparel.
What are the events for the 2022-2023 season?
See "Event Manual" tab for specific events and rules.
How do practices work?
Every event is different! Sometimes students will have a specific task to accomplish, and other practices will focus more on asking questions and developing study materials. The structure of each practice is at the discretion of the event coach.
How can parents, LHS students, or other community members be involved?
