LGBTQIAP+ Representation

The LGBTQ+ community is a diverse group of people from all walks of life. Sometimes, it is hard to see positive LGBTQ+ role models in books, movies, and the media. People like Lady Gaga, Sam Smith, Harvey Milk, Hayley Kiyoko, Ellen DeGeneres, Lil Nas X, Demi Lovato, and Laverne Cox are all great role models for the entire LGBT community.

Here are some books that have positive LGBTQ+ protagonists, and that preach equality for all.

• George by Alex Gino - George is about a transgender girl that longs to be seen for who she truly is.

• Rick by Alex Gino -Rick Is about a kid tying to figure out himself.

• The Love and Lies of Rukhsana Ali by Sabina Khan - Rukhsana is a lesbian teenager who struggles with the aftermath of coming out to conservative parents

• It's Not Like It's a Secret by Misa Sugiura - This book follows the young love between two girls who are coming to terms with their own sexuality

• The Miseducation of Cameron Post - This story follows Cameron Post, a young teenager sent to gay conversion camp after getting caught with her girlfriend

• Symptoms of Being Human - This book follows a part of the LGBT+ community that is typically not represented in the mainstream media: gender-fluid individuals. A great story about acceptance regardless of gender identity.

• Lily and Dunkin - This story follows Lily, a transgender girl struggling to get others to accept her in a hetero-normative society, and Dunkin, a young boy struggling with bipolar, and the two's friendship that forms

• Little and Lion - This story follows an African American, Jewish, Bisexual girl coming to terms with her own identity.

• Orpheus Girl - This story follows a lesbian girl living in texas with her grandmother, who is sent to a conversion therapy camp with her girlfriend.

Here are some movies and films that have LGBT+ protagonists:

• Gender Revolution- A film by Katie Couric on Netflix that explores the lives of transgender, intersex, and nonbinary people and how gender has evolved through time

• Growing Up Coy: A documentary that follows Coy, a young transgender girl, as her family pushes a lawsuit on her school for not allowing Coy to attend the bathroom that matches her identity

• Love, Simon: This movie follows Simon, a gay teenager, who struggles with being his true self and coming out to his family, and begins writing letters with an anonymous boy, who is, like Simon, gay.

• The Most Dangerous Year: This documentary follows many transgender people during 2016 - a year that is said to be the most dangerous year for trans people, when many anti-trans laws were passed. It shows the story of people who have very accepting family, and those who aren't so lucky
