In the 26-27 season, WKDC will have pieces in the styles of hip-hop, lyrical, contemporary, and jazz. These four styles will be competed at local dance competitions. WKDC also performs pom routines at school events, including football sidelines, pep rallies, and basketball game half-times.
All WKDC dancers are full members of the team. Each member will be cast in various pieces or roles. This means that team member may be cast in 1-5 dances in the styles of hip-hop, jazz, lyrical, and/or contemporary. Dance casting is based on audition scores in the adjacent dance genre. Should a member not be cast in a dance, he or she will serve as an alternate for this piece. However, dancers can be added to pieces during the season if they perform well when learning choreography. All dancers perform all pom routines.
WKDC loves performing! Throughout the season, we will present our skills in three showcases: the WKHS Winter Dance Showcase, the WKHS Spring Dance Showcase, and the District 1 Dance Showcase. We also show our school spirit by performing on the sidelines at all home football games and several White Knoll events, such as pep rallies and basketball game half-times. WKDC will travel to two competitions throughout the season, in which judges will score and rank each piece.
Practices take place after school 1-2 times per week. They are typically 2.5-3 hours long. The yearly schedule is created after the team has been determined and all dancers have their dance studio class schedules. We do our best to schedule practice around dance studio schedules so that studio dancers are able to take part in the dance team. We are not able to schedule practices around other WK sports schedules.
Take a look at WKDC handbook from the 25-26 season to get an idea of how the dance company operates. The handbook will provide details on the costs associated with being a team member and how payments are made. Disclosure: Some edits will be made for the 26-27 season.
