The relative risk of an event is the likelihood of the occurrence of the event for individuals with the presence of certain risk variables as compared with the likelihood of its occurrence in a reference group. For example, the risk for out-of-school suspensions might be greater for one group of students relative to everyone else. A relative risk greater than 1 indicates disproportionately higher risk for the group in question.
