Recommended Haves for Mentoring

It is recommended that you have the following in place for your mentoring program: 

• a mentoring guide or written procedures that clearly defines the expectations for your school building.  Suggested items to put in your mentoring guide/procedures can include but or not limited to: 

  • • signing in and out of the building

    • communicating with the site coordinator

    • mandated reporting

    • reporting if a student makes comments about suicide or expresses suicidal thoughts

    • goals and objects of mentoring

    • where conversations will take place between mentors and mentees

• a training for all your mentors prior to the mentors meeting with the mentees. Suggested items to include in your training can include but or not limited to: 

  • • defining what a mentor is and what a mentor is not

    • who and how to contact the site coordinator if there is a concern about a student

    • procedures specific to your school building
