The best thing you can do for your child's language is to tell them EVERYTHING! If your child is an ASL user and you don't know a lot, just do as much as you can while you describe what you're doing (and check out my ASL resources for more opportunities to learn). If you child is a listening and spoken language user, give them as much language as you can while they are awake! "Don't just do it, talk them through it!"
For example: Normally, you might grab the mail, flip through it, and sit it on the counter. This is an opportunity! You can say, "I got the mail from the mailbox! Let me see what I have. This is about the new restaurant and their food. This one is a bill - we have to pay money for our lights and water. This one can go in the trash." Those few seconds while you're flipping can give your child KEY vocabulary they may not have otherwise heard.
Read, read, read. Books provide massive amount of vocabulary and allow you to describe experiences that you don't get to do in your day-to-day life. Go on whatever adventures you can, and then fill in the gaps with books! Read the same books over and over again, let your kids explore books on their own, and show your excitement for reading time. If you need books in your home, please let me know. I have plenty and can get you some great options! Check out the ASL resources page for some online ASL stories as well!
Get involved in community activities for Deaf and hard of hearing children and adults. Join local Deaf/hard of hearing and ASL facebook pages for local events. I try to share these out as I see them as well! Hands and Voices is another parent support group with lots of information and activities available.
