Dear Parents/Guardians:
The South Carolina General Assembly enacted the Comprehensive Health Education Act of 1988 demonstrating the commitment of this state toward improving the health of our children. Through this particular mandate, the General Assembly members have emphasized the importance of our children to recognize, understand, and make appropriate decisions about their emerging sexuality.
The goal of this program is to assist our children in becoming healthy, happy, responsible and caring adults who are able to deal appropriately with their own growth and development and to form strong families of their own. We, the teachers and administrators of School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties, believe that the parents or guardians are the foremost educators in their child’s learning in the area of human sexuality. The purpose of this curriculum is to supplement and support your efforts.
Lexington Five created a sixth grade curriculum from several resources. As you review the topics to be covered, keep in mind that your child will use the Teen Health textbook published by Glencoe, 2007 and Your Relationships by Meeks Heit, 1990.
Topics to be covered:
1: Ground Rules and Human Relationships
2: Accepting Body Changes during Puberty
3: Choose Abstinence from Sex
4: Outside Influences
5: Erin's Law
Please note that male and female students will be separated for instruction in certain topics to facilitate more thorough discussion of single sex issues.
We invite you to review the human sexuality curriculum that the students will use. It will be available for your viewing from 8am-4pm in the Parent Parlor. Please call office in advance to make sure there is a room available for viewing material.
Sincerely,
Sixth Grade Physical Education Teachers
