Hungary is landlocked with Austria to the West, Slovakia to the North, Ukraine to the North-East, Romania to the East, Serbia to the South, Croatia to the South, and Slovenia to the South west. The capital city is Budapest, and is the center of a lot of business. The Danube River basin is important because over thousands of years, many cultures have settled there. Budapest, Hungary’s coordinates are 47.1625 degrees North, and 19.5033 degrees East. With about 90,000 square km of territory, Hungary is about the size of the state of Indiana. Hungary is similar in size to its surrounding countries. The United States is about 106 times the size of Hungary.
An important body of water is the Danube River, which runs right down the center of the country, and through Budapest. The biggest lake is Lake Balaton, in the western part of the country. The highest point in Hungary is Mount Kekes, in the Matra mountain range northeast of Budapest.

Some famous places in Hungary are Buda Castle which houses the Hungarian National Gallery, and the Budapest history museum.
The Hungarian Parliament Building, is the largest building in Hungary, and sits on the Pest side of the Danube. It houses the national assembly of the government.
The Fisherman’s Bastion is part of the Buda Castle. Its seven stone towers symbolize the seven chieftains of the Magyars who founded Hungary.

Tourists visit the country for a lot of reasons, but they specifically come to visit the 1,500 thermal spas. Hungary has many natural thermal springs.
Tourists also come to see the beautiful capital city, Budapest.
