Ever since I was able to explore the internet here are some of the things I have encountered and learned as a netizen.
According to the Cybersafe Care website, these are the acceptable and proper behavior when on the internet. If you are an internet user, it is significant to always remember that we are responsible for everything we perform in the internet especially with popular social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Tiktok, and Instagram. Anything that we do can lead to consequences so always be mindful and kind.
Our personal information may include our name, date of birth, address, and especially financial information. If our information falls in the wrong hands, it can be exploited and used without our consent. Doxxing has become a popular especially on social media platforms like TikTok. A way to avoid this is to avoid revealing too much information to strangers on the internet. Personal information can also be obtained through phishing or other forms of cyber attack.
One of my most notable cyber safety and internet etiquette is setting strong passwords. A few years ago my Facebook account was hacked due to a mistake in my part by setting a weak password and passing it to another person whom I trusted. Passwords exists for the very reason to protect our personal information from users and viruses that could risk our safety,
Being respectful towards others
This is a netiquette that plays a very crucial role in exploring the internet. It can be associated with cyber harassment because I've seen people fight over matters that may lead to cyber bullying or doxxing. Avoid using insults and slurs that may hurt other people. Ask for permission if sharing content online, for example before you post a picture of you and your friend, ask them first if they are alright with it because not everyone is comfortable with sharing on the internet. It is always important to remember that behind every screen is a person. Avoid starting conflicts or participating in them is a way to respect others and yourself.
Double check before you click share or send
Another problem that netizens face are fake news or false information on the internet. One must first verify the source of the subject before spreading it across social media. By sharing content publicly, we reach out to others and allow them to see different content, it is better to check first if the information only contains facts. Doing this may also prevent getting into conflicts with other people.
