Additional Resources
Lessons (focus on getting students outside):
- Backyard Safari (K-2, but could be adapted): Every organism needs food, water, shelter, and space. A place that meets all these needs is called a habitat. Students will explore a nearby habitat—their backyard, schoolyard, or other outdoor setting—to look for signs of animals living there.
- Hungry Plants (Oregon Ag in the Classroom): Students will discover that plants, like humans, need an adequate amount of nutrients to grow and stay healthy.
- Oregon Natural Resources Education Program: offer professional development and educational resources for formal and out of classroom educators throughout the state.
- Teaching Outside: Connecting Outdoor Learning to Environmental Literacy
- School Garden Project of Lane County Curriculum
- Agriculturally Themed Suggested Reading featuring Black, Indigenous and People of Color (Oregon Ag in the Classroom): Find a list of books that feature black, indigenous and people of color in agriculturally themed books. Use these books in conjunction with our Literature Circles Guide for a complete language arts activity. Using agriculture as a contextual theme in literature circles allows students to choose publications on a variety of different subjects and encourages classroom discussion on common connections between the texts.
