Mrs. Horgan

WELCOME!

Your health is largely dependent upon personal attitudes, knowledge, & behaviors. The objective of our Health courses is to help give students the knowledge & skills necessary to make healthy choices & engage in healthy behaviors. Engaging in healthy behaviors now will help prevent health problems in the future!

Wellness 7 is a combination of our introductory Health & Family & Consumer Science classes. It is year long course that meets every day - once day of Health with me, the opposite day taught by Mrs. Rich, the Family & Consumer Science teacher. During the Health component of the course, some of the topics we will be discussing are changes during adolescence, emotions, friendships & peer pressure, family relationships, alcohol & other drugs, personal safety, & reproduction (anatomy & function). There will be a strong emphasis placed on building skills such as decision making, problem solving, self-management, relationship management, stress management, goal setting, & advocacy.

High School Health is a full year, ½ credit course that meets every other day. This is the New York State mandated Health course required for each student to graduate. During the course, we will continue to build upon & practice the skills introduced in Wellness 7 as well as introduce more in-depth & age-appropriate Health content. Some of the topics we will be discussing throughout the year include: alcohol & other drugs, mental health & suicide risk reduction, media literacy, lifestyle diseases (cancer, heart disease, diabetes), nutrition, relationships, personal safety, reproduction & pregnancy, birth control, sexually transmitted infections, parenting, & current events. Students will also become certified in American Heart Association Adult/Child/Infant CPR and AED.

STUDENTS: Please be sure to check out our Google Classroom regularly. Here you will find more specific info about what we are currently doing in class.

STUDENTS & PARENTS: If you haven't already, be sure you can log in to SchoolTool. This is the bast way to see assignment grades as well as any missing assignments. If there is a zero in SchoolTool, that assignment has been graded & it was not completed. If there isn't anything next to an assignment, it hasn't been graded or I haven't been able to input the grades yet. All assignments given in class will be added to the Google Classroom if you are ever absent or can't find your paper copy. For parents specifically, checking SchoolTool is also a good way to see when we have been talking about in class if you would like to follow up at home!
