Lunch and Recess Switching- Should the Rule be more Lenient or is it Good as it is?
by Miguel Sylvestre - Grade 8
Every student in this school has eight periods in the day. Usually 4 cores, cycle and language, and a lunch/recess split. A student’s lunch and recess split is usually 20 minutes lunch, and 20 minutes recess. Whenever you receive your schedules, you receive one of two splits. Each student either gets lunch first and recess second, or recess first and lunch second. On paper, this is good. You are able to have every student eat and replenish their energy, while still giving every student some free time in the day. However, what this split doesn’t account for is the student’s needs/wants. Recently this year, lunch monitors have become very strict on the switching policy. You are not able to switch to the other place (lunch or recess) until the whistle. This rule was created by the administration and was asked to be enforced in order to maintain control, but should it be more lenient, or should it stay this strict?
The Lunch Switch rule should be more lenient to allow students to switch whenever they want. The rule in itself is kind of invalid in a student’s perspective. Why should the school limit how much playing time they get, or how much time they get to eat. While this rule may be good for teachers and administrators, it does not account for how the student feels about their free period. The lunch/recess split should be up to the students and how they want to spend their time, not be controlled by a whistle which is blown by lunch monitors. For example, on any given day, students are obligated to go to their designated place first, and switch to the other at the halfway mark, or when the whistle is blown. But what about if a student does not want to eat. On one day, a student might not be feeling like eating, but they are still forced to stay inside for half the period even though all they want to do is go outside. Let’s think the other way around. What if a student does not want to spend an entire half doing essentially nothing outside. The school doesn’t provide any equipment for recess break, which leaves people to either bring their own, play with others, or do nothing. What if they want to sit inside and eat all period? This split also doesn’t take into account the eating customs of some people. 20 minutes may seem like a lot, but when you take into account the time you spend coming down from you class, the lunch lines, and time switch, there is only 10-15 minute left. This means that a lot of people, instead of eating slowly, enjoying their food and chewing well, most of the time they have to gulp it down without chewing too much, which can cause health problems, ruined habits, etc…. For example, as you have less time and more food to eat, your eating time and quality decreases in school by a lot, and as this becomes a habit, whenever you actually have time to eat, like at home, you start eating faster, even without noticing, and this can lead to health problems. Lastly, all of this rushed eating time leads to lots of food being wasted. With so little time to eat, more and more food gets thrown away. If you give more leniency on the Lunch Switch rule
New school bathrooms for LMS
by Wesley Martinez - Grade 7
I’ve been here since 5th grade has moved to LMS and have been in the newspaper club since then. One thing I have noticed all these years is that the bathrooms are filthy, old, disgusting and damaged. There has to be a better place where we can go to the bathroom and there possibly is. This article is about the idea of renovating all the bathrooms in the building. In the boys bathroom instead of 1 stall I think that there should be 4 and instead of 1 or 2 sinks there should be 4 sinks so more people can wash there hands and not have to wait. New new soap dispensers would be a good idea as well since their all rusted and broken. The girls bathroom would be updated as well with new stalls new sinks and automatic hand dryers as well as the boys.Plus the new bathroom doors would include smart handles that will be powered by our ID cards and make sure that everyone stays in the bathroom of their grade level and if you want all the details on the smart handles powered by ID cards check out my article on new smart lockers for LMS posted here. Also check my other article on new electric school buses for the whole district of leonia and my other newspaper friends articles: articles:https://sites.google.com/leoniaschools.org/thelionsroarspring2023ed/featured-stories/lms-lion-news?authuser=0
I hope you guys agree that the bathrooms need a major overhaul and if you don’t that's totally ok. Don’t forget to tell me your feedback and opinions and maybe what the new bathrooms should look like.
New Automatic Sink
by Timo Shwan
We need a new sink that is automatically used so that the sink will not randomly run and flood the whole bathroom, this is important because some naughty kids they clog the sink and leave the sink running. This happens a lot because a lot of people think it is very funny, even though it is not, Because there is only a limited amount of freshwater in the world. Also it keeps people from going to the bathroom because they are clogged. It is also bad because they make the janitors do more work. Which is very mean. We should definitely get automatic sinks in this school.
Modernizing the LMS blacktop and school bus terminal
by Wesley Martinez - Grade 7
Recess is a lot of people’s favorite part of school but one thing I have noticed is that the concrete is starting to wear down and people seem to never stop getting hurt by falling off the dirt hill . So that's why I’ve decided to write an article about modernizing the blacktop by paving it with asphalt and planting new Azalea bushes that are safe with no needles and beautiful to look at.Right by the near the bus stop a new basketball court would be put in place to make sure people don’t have to look for a place to play the most popular sport. And new bus stops would be put in place with bus stops with signs about what route stops where and a schedule when each bus arrives and what bus leaves at what time including late buses. The big blue cargo container would be removed and the dumpster would be removed and put into a mini parking lot by where the 5th grade entrance is that is only used by 3 cars and an old bus that doesn’t run during the day. The blacktop driveway could fit more buses and it would be repaved. I hope this project comes to life on day even if I don’t get to see it, I just want the kids to have fun.
American Dream Mall
by Wesley Martinez - Grade 7
American Dream Mall is a shopping and entertainment mall in East Rutherford New Jersey. It has a dreamworks themed waterpark, a Nickelodeon themed amusement park, an aquarium called Sealife, a Lego themed attraction, Angry Birds and blacklight mini golf and so much more. When it comes to food there is a Charley’s Philly Steak, Haagen Daaz, Five Guys,Dunkin, and Taco Bell and a lot more to offer if you’re hungry. If you need to shop, stores include, Abercrombie, Aerie, Apple, Babies R us, Bath and Body Works, Best Buy, Footlocker, Gucci, Toys R us. They even have an H Mart. The Dreamworks waterpark has 2 extraordinary tall slides called the Thrilligascar, There's a play area for the kids called the Kung Fu Panda Temple Of Awesomeness. There’s a ride called the Mad Flush when you go on a slide and you swerve and fall in the water. American dream is definitely a fun place to be and I would definitely recommend it to all of you reading this from the food, shops and amusement. It definitely would be a place I would go back and visit.
So, you're going on your first airplane flight?
by Evan Kirby - Grade 6
Have you never been on an airplane before? Are you about to take a flight to a place? Do you ever wonder what those odd sounds on the plane are? Then this is the perfect article for you. Keep reading to find out the answer to these questions and more. First of all, be ready! You might have heard that you need to be 2-3 hours early for your flight. Don't ignore that. You definitely should! You never know when traffic, security, lines, and other things could leave you a short 20 minutes away from your airplane flight boarding. Don't be overly worried either. If you show up too early, you'll end up being very bored, and sooner or later, you'll walk around. There's only one view in an airport; Stores and Gates. Nothing but that, and before you know it, you'll be buying so many things you can't fit them in your bag. Oh yeah, your one carry-on bag. You only get one carry on bag. If it fits under the seat, it's good. If it doesn't, you need to put it in the overhead bins, which you can't reserve, or check your bag. Most good airlines give you one free carry on bag, and one free checked bag per person. If they don't, you probably got these tickets for a cheap price. Did I read your mind?
What is a checked bag, you might be wondering. A checked bag is a bag that goes into the bottom compartment of the airplane, and you get it back in the baggage claim of the arrival airport. Once you've boarded the flight, the worries start to begin. What is that smoke coming from the sides of the plane? What is that sound? That smell? Don't be worried! The smoke coming from the outside side of the plane is simply the engine either turning on or warming up. As long as there isn't too much smoke, you shouldn't be worried. The smoke coming from the inside of the sides of the plane is just the air conditioning getting warmed up. This will stop shortly after beginning the movement(taxi) That sound? What is it? Is it a screeching sound, or is it more of a Revving and then stop, and then again. If it's a screeching sound, it's probably just the screechy wheels, and that is totally normal on older planes. If it's a rev and stop, rev and stop, sound, then the engine is probably having a minor issue. This can usually be fixed in minutes, and you don't usually hear about it. The smell that you might be smelling is fuel oil, which is a very recognizable smell. This is normal, in fact, the normal smell of planes is described as fuel oil with cleaning spray smell. Once you've taken off, there's nothing to be worried about. In fact, most of the time that planes crash is during take off or landing, so after you've gotten past take off, you don't need to be worried.
You will probably be excited to hear that most airlines provide food, but let's get rid of those high expectations. The food is very salty, and that's the only taste that you will taste the entire meal. Unless you're in first class. What's that? You've never heard of first class? Well, here we go. There are three classes on most airlines. Economy, Business Class(Sometimes Plus or Economy Plus), and First Class(Sometimes Front Class, or Plus). Some airlines just have Economy and First, or since it isn't the best on some airlines, it's just Extra Legroom, or Plus, or just anything. You'll be able to tell, because Economy is always the same(unless you are in a foreign country, then the name is in a different language). First Class has more legroom, more chair space, larger tv''s(if your flight has them, but sometimes , they only give them to First Class) and so much more. You're probably thinking, "I should get first class then, right?". Nope! First Class is way too expensive for the average human, and if this is your first airplane flight, then don't get first class, you still have to decide if you like flying. That's right, it isn't the best of an experience for some people, and some people decide they don't want to go on an airplane flight again. So I recommend not getting it, at least for now.
