War in Israel
by Sophia Jorge - Grade 8
No one believed this could happen, but there it was happening. Islam is being attacked by Hamas, a military Islamic movement. This war started due to the events that occurred on October 7, 2023. Islam was not expecting to be attacked; it was a surprise attack that ended in severe losses. Hundreds of lives were lost and many others injured. Many others were taken hostage, including children and babies. That day they attacked Israel from the air and land. Days later there was a blast in Gaza, a Palestinian city that killed so many. This wasn’t any bombing, it was a hospital bombing. This hospital held injured soldiers, parents and kids that had nothing to do with the war. Based on a CNN article, the text states “I just finished one surgery and suddenly we heard a big explosion, we thought it’s outside the hospital because we never thought that they would bomb the hospital,” (Picheta) This quote shows how no one ever believed a person would be able to bomb a hospital full of innocent people but then it happened. No one suspected this to happen and no one was ready. There were surgeries going on and sick people being treated when the bomb went off. There is a theory, saying that it was a misfire by militant group Islamic Jihad that caused the blast. The US president, Joe Biden backed this theory and even went to visit Israel after the bombing. This war started because Hamas, the group who attacked Islam, felt that it was motivated to launch the attack essentially as the culmination of long-building anger over Israeli policies. There have been recent outbreaks in Jerusalem that made Palestinian people mad. This war has been hard on all families in and out of Islam. So many innocent people lost their lives or were kidnapped in this war. There are still over 100 people being kept hostage. Islam is now on day 17 of fighting Hamas and protecting their city.
What’s happening between Ukraine and Russia?
by Sophia Jorge - Grade 8
On Thursday, February 24, 2022 Russia invaded Ukraine with no advance warning. The war started on this day and it is still ongoing. Russia and Ukraine are the two countries that have been at war for over a year. The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin was the first to attack Ukraine and the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy replied back with a war. The innocent bystanders in Ukraine were being killed by bombs and by soldiers from Russia. Civilians in Russia were also being arrested and killed for trying to protest for Ukraine, against their own country.
This war started in Kyiv, Ukraine. Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine and Russia was after the capital. Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, Mykolayiv, and Zaporizhzhya Oblasts are all cities that Russia got a hold of.
March 9, 2022 was the bloodiest day in the war between Ukraine and Russia. On this day, Russia bombed a hospital located in Vuhledar. A Russian ballistic missile carrying a cluster munition struck just outside the hospital. There were four civilians killed and another 10 injured, six of them healthcare workers, and damaged the hospital, an ambulance, and civilian vehicles. Not only was this bad but now when soldiers became injured while fighting the war they would not have a healthcare facility to be treated at. Steve Goose, arms director of human rights shared his opinion. He said
“Russian forces should stop using cluster munitions and end unlawful attacks with weapons that indiscriminately kill and maim.” (Ukraine)
This is important because it teaches the world about the crimes Russia is commiting and the war that is happening. Russia started this war because they thought Ukraine was going to join NATO. If Ukraine did join NATO earlier than this whole war could have been over within the first week but that did not happen. Vladimir Putin, Russia’s president, thought that Ukraine joining NATO would be wrong and so therefore started to attack Ukraine. If Ukraine joined NATO then they would have become a protected state and Putin did not think this was acceptable. Therefore he ordered a full invasion with more than two hundred thousand troops.
Many people did not think Ukraine would last this long but so far they are still holding on strong, and determined to win the war.
The Horrid Conflicts of Israel and Palenstine
by Jacob Fradkin - Grade 8
History has seen several conflicts and wars, but none can explain the horrors taking place in the country of Israel. Several innocent women and children slaughtered due to the acts of Hamas, a Palestinian terrorist group. Nothing can explain their inhumane acts towards Israel. Several hostages taken from their homes, cities destroyed through the warfare in the air. The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) are taking major precautions to ensure absolute safety and protection towards the country of Israel. Several countries in the UN (United Nations) and the United States have declared their loyalty and support of Israel. Hamas, however, is using the innocent citizens of Palestine to cover their actions, and in this mishap Gaza has also been destroyed. Innocent people on both sides are suffering, it is another global catastrophe seen by society. The appalling acts by Hamas are truly disgusting. The main question, however, that everyone asks is what was the origin of it all? It originated from the very conflict within Israel.
It was known that Israel and Palestine were not necessarily on good terms for a large amount of time. Aside from this fact, Israel has always had a strong political and governmental system that ensured a successfully running country. Over time, the views of those who were on the political court in Israel disagreed with each other which led to the events that we see today. This internal conflict showed Hamas a weakening in the system as Israel was not united was a country. This is when they attack and terrorized the people living there. Whilst viewing the local news channeled Eyewitness News, I was informed of the horrifying attack made on a local kibbutz near Tel Aviv. Hamas Representatives infiltrated the Israeli border and continued to raid the kibbutz. Innocent civilians were killed, and several had to evacuate their homes. Furthermore, due to the treacherous acts made by Hamas Israel has cut off all humanitarian aid going towards Gaza. This has set off another chain of reactions that have further worsened the already dreadful situation. Without proper humanitarian aid, Palestinian life is upon horrid turmoil. It has been reported that the IDF has committed these actions in the will of protection. We must all share sympathy, however, for both Israeli and Palestinian civilians.
Bed Bugs found in Paris
by Evan Kirby - Grade 6
Bedbugs have been found almost everywhere in Paris, and the fact that the Paris Olympics are only nine months away is not helping. These bed bugs have been found on trains, at cinemas and subways, and these bedbugs have also been found on the news. All this has caused "nationwide alarm," says The New York Times. Believe it or not, a ton of schools have been closed, one hospital has had a thorough extermination, and a few news stations even have their own bed bug-sniffing dogs. The bedbug infestations of Paris this year are up by 65 percent more than last year, which has caused this emergency. The fact that the Paris Olympics are just nine months away isn't helping the situation, because if players get bitten by the bugs, they might not be able to participate because of possible injuries or infections that these bed bugs may carry.
One Parisian named Leila Barname said she had never been so afraid to visit the cinema. Leila usually goes with her teenage granddaughters to watch a movie every Wednesday, but because of the bedbugs in the cinemas, she can't. Leila also hopes that what is happening won't "hurt France's image." With all of this, the city of lights might just be becoming the city of bites. The French transportation minister, Clement Beaune, has said that they are "taking this issue seriously" and have had a meeting. The French government, though, has barely said anything about the issue. "Must we wait for your office to be fully infested for you to react?" a Parisian said to the French Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne. Will the French work out a solution before the nine month Paris Olympics? Who knows? All we do know is that the French government needs to act fast if they want to get rid of the issue.
