Hello readers,
We'd like to share some important books to read right now. You might have heard about the protests going on in our country the past few days. These books represent points of view that are sometimes hidden from our view, and this week we want to highlight them. It's important for you to read and see voices of the unheard. We'd like to share some stories written by Black and Brown authors and we hope you enjoy reading them. These books might be a mirror into your own life, a window into someone else's life, or maybe will be a sliding glass door - maybe these stories can be a tool to empathize and help you stand up for what's right.
Read Lupita Nuong'o 's book Sulwe about loving oneself.
Read Kwame Alexander's award winning book The Undefeated, which illustrates generations of Black American heroes emerging from the shadows.
Read Not Quite Snow White by Ashley Franklin, which shares the story of a young girl who learns to ignore hateful words.
Read Jabari Jumps by Gaia Cornwall, where Jabari tries to gather up his courage to make a giant leap.
Read Sonia Sotamayor's book Just Ask! Be Different, Be Brave, Be You, a kind and caring book about the differences that make each of us unique.
Read Something Happened In Our Town, by Marianne Celano, Marietta Collins, and Ann Hazzard, a story that aims to answer children's questions about such traumatic events and to help children identify and counter racial injustice in their own lives.
Read Grace Byers' book I Am Enough, a lovely book of affirmations on loving who you are and respecting others.
Listen to Ms. Almeida read On the News, by Jillian Roberts, a story to help you understand what might be going on in the news.
Listen to Ms. Lewis read Come With Me, by Holly McGhee, a story to inspire you to do small things to help our world.
Listen to these stories and hear their messages. We can all stand up for what's right in the world.
Love,
Ms. Lewis and Ms. Compel

A few weeks ago Mr. Weimer presented to the fifth graders about bottle schools and it was so well received that we wanted to include more students in his next presentation! Here, you can listen to his presentation on Shelter Boxes.
This presentation connects to our Global Citizens work, specifically to the fifth graders investigation into human rights. The main aspects are shelter for a family, clean water, food preparation (stove, pots, pans, plates) and basic tools to start rebuilding a home.
