Developing character and supporting wellbeing should begin at an early age. In order for young people to use their strengths effectively, it is important that they have a clear idea of what these strengths are, before discovering how their strengths can play a vital part in all areas of their lives.
Amazing People Schools resources and activities can be instrumental in helping teachers to support young people in recognising their own strengths, and the strengths of others. By embedding a strengths-based approach, pupils continually gain self-awareness and self- confidence, which can support the development of the key personal and social skills that are fundamental in helping them to live healthier, more fulfilled, and more productive lives.
Effectively embedding a strengths-based approach to learning and development relies on continuity. This can be achieved through the implementation of steps to embed the language and action of character, including whole school, class based, or independent activities. Enabling pupils to readily recognise and understand the importance and impact of character strengths supports their ability to independently identify a range of opportunities to practise them, in school and beyond. In turn, this encourages pupils to make good decisions in all areas of their lives, based on their increased self-awareness, thereby preparing them for the next stage of their developmental journey. In addition, an increasingly evolving social landscape requires us to consistently teach pupils about the character strengths that everyone has, so they will grow to appreciate people based on the content of their character as well as their achievement.
