It has been wonderful to welcome Year 6 back after the half-term break. They have returned with fantastic energy and focus, making a truly positive start to the second half of the autumn term. We've dived straight into some exciting new topics, and the children are already working hard.
Here is a brief overview of what we have been learning over the last two weeks.
Our English focus has been on persuasive writing. The children started by honing their skills trying to persuade their classmates to 'buy' a selection of strange and unusual objects! We then linked this to our class novel, Holes, by using the digital design tool Canva to plan, draft, and publish eye-catching leaflets persuading people to visit the (not-so-lovely) Camp Green Lake.
Maths has been all about fractions! We have been securing our understanding of operations, tackling the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions. The children have shown great resilience when working with both proper fractions and mixed numbers, and they are becoming much more confident with these tricky concepts.
We have launched our new Science topic: Light. Our investigations started with a fundamental question: how do we see? The children have been working scientifically to gather evidence and prove that light travels in straight lines. They have also been practising their observation skills by drawing detailed, labelled scientific diagrams to show the path light takes from a source, to an object, and then to our eyes.
In Geography, we have started another new topic: Population. We have been exploring how the global population is changing over time, as well as zooming in on the populations of specific countries. The children have been thoughtfully considering the various factors that might influence these changes, while learning key terminology such as birth rate and death rate.
This half term in RE, our focus is on Humanism. We have begun our studies by discussing and debating what characteristics make a good role model. The children shared some very insightful and mature ideas about the people who inspire them and the qualities they admire.
