Common Career Myths:
The career I choose now, I must stick to forever.
WRONG: Many people will have worked in several different areas before they retire from the world of work
What I value in a career/job now will stay the same as I get older.
WRONG: Many people change careers because what matters to them changes as they live their lives -- this is why many people switch jobs or career fields (what they value changes).
I have to go to college to have a good job .
WRONG: There are many jobs that make great money that require certifications, an associate's degree, on-the-job training, or specialized training such as trade school
The major I choose in college must match the field I end up employed in.
WRONG: Most college degrees are generalized enough that the skills you obtain in college will help you in a variety of fields
My GPA isn't that great, so I will never be able to go to a 4-year college.
WRONG: A lot of students choose to take a few courses at their local Community College first to raise their college GPA, and then transfer to a 4-year university
The Trait and Factor Theory developed by John Holland, divides the world of work into 6 key areas that people are interested in. When you take this assessment within Major Clarity, you are given a unique code, which describes the top 3 areas of interest for you.
RIASEC stands for: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional
Example: You recieve a code of SEA---this means that your top areas of interest are careers that have a high level of social, enterprising, and artistic characteristics. Typically those who have SEA are intersted in working with people, being creative, and jobs that allow them to persuade or manage activities or tasks. If you google your 'code' you will find lists of occupations that match with your interests.
If you have ever considered a career in healthcare but aren't quite sure where to start, becoming an LPN may interest you. Take a look at the website practicalnursing.org to learn more.
