Director’s Notes: On the surface, Into the Woods is an entertaining blend of some of the world's most beloved fairy tales set to the magnificent music of Stephen Sondheim. However, with all the best fairy tales, it contains both light and darkness, becoming a metaphor for our own personal journeys in life in regards to what paths we take, what wishes we make and ultimately what we discover along the way in regards to love, loss, values, choices and responsibility. Each of our journeys can have a profound effect on us, and of course, our journeys never truly end. Past decisions and actions, both large and small, often cycle through our lives in order to teach us lessons. Like the characters in the show, we continually find ourselves having to courageously return to the woods, faced with challenges that give us new perspectives which help us make choices that shape our lives. We have to learn to be brave, again and again, in order to write our own stories with endings that fulfill us. The reason to go into the woods is to ultimately “find our souls”, but in order to do so we sometimes get lost, lose our innocence or get hurt along the way. Through persistence, helping one another and listening to our hearts, the journey is worth the travel. “Into the Woods we go!” - Jessa Rowan
