The Walker Honor Band is made up of students from both 7th and 8th grade. Students get the opportunity to work on high level ensemble skills by playing challenging band music that pushes them to become high school level performers. Students are expected to participate fully in all-region auditions and have more opportunities to compete with small ensembles during solo and ensemble contests in the spring. Placement for this ensemble is determined through auditions each spring prior to their 7th or 8th grade years.
The Symphonic Band is made up of students from both 7th and 8th grade. Students get the opportunity to work on beginner to intermediate ensemble skills by playing challenging, appropriate, and fun band music. Students are encouraged to participate in all-region auditions as it improves their individual playing ability tremendously. Personal musical growth in individual and ensemble skills during the Fall semester may lend the opportunity for students to move to Honor Band for the Spring semester. All students play a solo for the Solo and Ensemble contest in the spring. Placement for this ensemble is determined through auditions each spring prior to their 7th or 8th grade years.
All 7th and 8th grade students participate in the Lakeside Lobo Pep Band. This ensemble performs stand tunes at each pep rally and may have the opportunity to attend football games in the fall to show spirit and cheer on the teams. Examples of the music they play include the school song and fight song, and pop songs like Crunch Time, Crazy Train, Happy, Hand Clap, etc.
This band consists of 6th grade or 1st year band students. The instruments are separated into four different periods in the school day so directors can provide the best training on sound production, hand position, posture, and technique. This ensemble performs at the winter concert and spring concert all together. Students who would like to join band (5th grade or otherwise) need to contact a band director and attend an Instrument Test Drive in the Spring prior to their first year in band. With the help of professional musicians and teachers, students will select an instrument that allows them to be the most successful to enjoy their band experience.
