Millicent Fawcett (1847 – 1929) was a leading Suffragist and campaigner for equal rights for women. She led the biggest suffrage organisation, the non-violent NUWSS from 1890-1919, and played a key role in gaining women the vote. She was educated in Blackheath and carried a passion for education all her life, eventually helped to found Newnham College, Cambridge. In February of this year, Fawcett was announced as the winner of the BBC Radio 4 poll for the most influential woman of the past 100 years. Over 90 years after her death, Fawcett continues to inspire people everywhere to fight for gender equality.
Dear future year 7s,
We as a school and as a college are very excited to welcome all our new students to Leigh Academy Blackheath!
As part of the Fawcett College student government, our job includes welcoming you all to our lovely Fawcett College, named after Millicent Fawcett, pioneer for women’s rights who attended school in Blackheath!
We know secondary school can seem intimidating but we are here to make the transition as smooth and happy as possible. We will be around the building, and are always happy to show you around and explain anything that you might not quite understand.
All of the teachers are incredibly caring and supportive- they don’t bite!
Your tutor will be your designated teacher that you will see everyday, they will deliver your tutor lessons. These lessons include things like healthy habits, relationships, and sex education. They will also be your first-call if you need any assistance or support, they are always happy to advise you!
In Fawcett college we are also lucky enough to be home to our school library which houses a wide selection of books available to every student in our community. These are the books you can choose your reading material for the first five minutes of every lesson from.. Our school librarian, Miss Medcalf is also at the library during lunch time and break so if you would like to complete homework or read during these times that is an option!
Also, on our floor we have the privilege of having a plaza, an open space on each floor in which we can work collaboratively or independently. Our plaza is also the space where we, as a college, can express our pride and history.
Within our Student Government, we have 2 representatives per class. These people will represent your class in our student government and will put forward any ideas your class may have.
Welcome to LAB!
