Principal Investigator
Wynn Meyer is an assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Lehigh University. She is an evolutionary biologist who uses variation in genomes to study how living things evolve and to draw connections between genes and traits. Her current research focuses on identifying parts of mammals' genomes that may be involved in adapting to different diets. She is also interested in using science to inform policy and improving policy to support science. Dr. Meyer received a PhD in Human Genetics from the University of Chicago. She conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Pittsburgh and served as an Executive Branch AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow at NIH before joining the Lehigh faculty in fall 2020.
Marcos da Silva is an evolutionary biologist working on convergent evolution of blind cavefish, jointly with the Kowalko lab at Lehigh University. In the Meyer lab, their tasks involve the characterization of the genomic signatures of cave evolution on a macroevolutionary scale through existing genomic data in conjunction with new long-read, genome assemblies in order to further refine candidates for functional validation. They received their PhD in Evolutionary Biology from the University of Basel, Switzerland. In their free time, Dr. da Silva likes to attend metal concerts, party at techno clubs, work on punk activism and also focus on horror films, good wine and mountaineering.
PhD student, Cell and Molecular Biology concentration
Michael Tene is a Biological Sciences PhD student in the cell and molecular biology concentration. In the Meyer lab, he is focused on the analysis and verification of differing evolutionary rates in mammalian diets. Outside of the lab, he has an interest in pedagogy, science communication, and in his free time he educates himself on various topics of interest through video lectures.
PhD student, Evolution and Behavior concentration
Harshal Wasnik is a Biological Sciences PhD student in the Evolutionary Biology and Behavior concentration. In the Meyer lab, his research revolves investigating mammalian dietary patterns and applying bioinformatics for data analysis. Outside of the lab, he shares interest in astronomy, harmonica and playing cricket.
Class of 2028
Tyler Gruver is a Sophomore studying Computer Science and Business. In Meyer Lab, he assists Michael in analysis of evolutionary rates of mammals by developing scripts to identify relationships in gene loss across mammalian species. Outside of the lab, he enjoys coding, working out, and hanging out with friends.
Class of 2026
Ashlynn Harlow is a Senior undergraduate at Lehigh University majoring in Molecular Biology with minors in Computer Science and Spanish & Hispanic Studies. She is working on a collaborative project between the Meyer and Kowalko labs exploring the regulation of eye development genes in mexican tetra fish. Outside of lab, she enjoys reading and hanging out with her cat, Juno.
Franklin and Marshall College Class of 2027
My name is Jack Harrison. I am a rising junior as Franklin & Marshall College where I major in Biochemistry. Also, I play football for my college as well as participate in other sports groups on campus. I really enjoy all things science and medicine and am studying to become a doctor. I also enjoy all things sports, running, hiking, and movies.
Class of 2027
Gwen is a junior working towards a BS in Biology and minors in engineering and entrepreneurship. In the Meyer lab, her research interests include the study of gene expression patterns and elucidating their evolutionary and phenotypic implications through computational methods. Outside of the lab, she is interested in biotechnology, as well as translational and applied research. In her free time, she enjoys reading and writing poetry and fiction in many genres, with a focus on science fiction, comedy, existentialism, and absurdism.
University of Pittsburgh Class of 2026
Lalitha Loka is an undergraduate student majoring in Computational Biology and English Writing at the University of Pittsburgh. She is working on analyzing data from specific genes to determine the evolutionary processes that resulted in certain dietary genes. Outside of the lab, she participates in the University of Pittsburgh Equestrian Team. Originally from the Lehigh Valley, she enjoys baking, reading, and crocheting in her free time.
