SDG #10 focuses on reducing inequality within and among countries. The nature of our work has led us to focus on localizing this goal within Bethlehem.Â
Income inequality and housing instability are rising in the Lehigh Valley. In 2023, the city of Bethlehem published a strategic report focused on addressing homelessness within the community. Tackling income inequality and making sure that those from all backgrounds have equal access to work opportunities will serve to improve the bottom line of wellbeing within Bethlehem and beyond. Family income has risen for the wealthiest few in our community over the past few years. Closing this gap will be crucial to the future economic sustainability of Bethlehem.
The Bethlehem Climate Action Plan has noted that 40% of the actions and resources laid out within the plan will go towards our frontline communities. The city of Bethlehem recently hired its first director of equity and inclusion to engage marginalized community members and provide access to resources. As the city develops, it will become increasingly important to include historically excluded members in decision-making processes. The future of Bethlehem should be guided by all of its citizens.
The Lehigh Valley has started to attract people from all over the country. As new members join our community, it is important to make sure that current residents are not pushed out. With massive events like Musikfest and the diverse culture within Bethlehem, it makes sense why people would want to live here. As the Lehigh Valley expands and our international population grows, it is imperative that Bethlehem adopts responsible and well-managed migration policies that balance the needs of our current community with those of our future members.
