Grades and Homework

Letter Grades

In third grade students are no longer graded by whether or not a skill is mastered. Instead, students will receive a letter grade based on quality and amount of work completed. Students will be graded on a 60/40 basis; 60% of their grade will be based on test grades, while the other 40% will be based on participation and assignments. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Homework

Family time is important and students should not spend a lot of time working on homework after school. Therefore, students will not have homework unless there is work that is not finished in the classroom within a reasonable time frame. On the other hand, students are recommended to study at home for spelling tests and other classroom tests as testing day approaches. Please let me know if you have any further questions about my homework policy.

Tests

A test will be given at the end of each unit. A unit can last from about 2 to 6 weeks depending on the content. Students usually have a test in each subject at least once per month. Tests are based on the vocabulary and assignments done in class. A study guide will be send home at least 2 days prior to test day.

Spelling tests will occur every week. There will be a spelling pretest on Monday and the final spelling test will be the following Friday. Students who receive 100% on the spelling pretest will not be required to take the final spelling test on Friday. Spelling tests will ALMOST always be on a Friday. Watch the newsletter for important test dates and spelling words. Please contact me if you have any questions regarding a test.

Study Guides

Students will get a study guide for reading, math, science, and social studies tests. The study guides will be given to students and sent home 2 days prior to the test day. Please be sure to watch for these! Reading study guides will mainly be vocabulary, content review, and short answer questions. Math study guides include extra practice for the students to complete at home and helpful information that they have learned throughout the unit. Study guides for science and social studies will be worked on and discussed together in class to ensure that students have the correct information to take home and study.
